1971 noRTON COMMANDO 750

2 Year Ground Up Restoration by Commando Expert, Fresh Service by NYC Norton, Matching Numbers, Runs and Rides Incredibly Well, 3k miles Since Restoration, Boyer Igniton, Shouldered Boranni Rims

This 1971 Norton Commando 750 is 3 owner bike, an outstanding-to-ride and expertly restored example. The bike was restored from the ground up by Commando expert Welby Reynolds of the Classic Bike Experience in Vermont over the course of two years. The previous owner had bought the bike from the original owner, who disassembled the bike with intentions of restoring it, but never got around to it.

Motor and gearbox and clutch rebuilt and gone through

Motor was in excellent condition, redone in original bore
New OE pistons and rings sourced and installed
Head sent to Fair Spares, a Norton expert, was rebuilt with top-shelf valves and springs
Fitted with later style headsteady
Front end fully rebuilt
Colorado Norton Works Oil Tank
Shouldered Borranis with stainless spokes
New mufflers
Boyer ignition
Front brake reshoed
New carbs

The color was perfectly matched-an original paint high rider fuel tank was sourced from ebay and used as the color match. According to the previous owner, this bike started life as a high rider as well. The bike only has a few imperfections- two tiny (size of a pen head) chips on the left side cover that have been being color matched and touched up, and two slightly chipped head fins on the right side of the motor.

We rode the bike to the 22nd annual gathering of the Nortons on April 19th, about a 200 mile roundtrip. The bike performed flawlessly all day long with really punchy power, tight handling, consistent 1 kick starting and perfect 1000rpm idle. Before the Nortons meet, we synced the carbs, adjusted the clutch, changed primary fluid, and cleaned up some connections in the wiring harness. I have been riding the bike myself quite a bit between Manhattan and Brooklyn and it is one of the sportiest feeling Commandos I've ridden.

I just had some more work done to the bike by Kenny at NYC Norton. For those of you that don't know his work- check out his website. He does Seely frame magnesium-everything Nortons and Matchless G50s and is an AHRMA national champion.He adjusted the front isolastics and replaced one of the head steady rubbers. He adjusted the front preload and put in fresh oil. He also did his swing arm modification. Commandos have a tendency to develop excess swing arm play side to side. While this bike was not out of spec with other bikes he'd seen, I had him do the mod, which consists of two clamps over the spindle. We also fitted an 5 way adjustable NHK steering damper from Clubman Racing for increased high speed stability.
