This 1968 BSA Lightning was rebuilt and reimagined by Brooklyn-based custom bike builder Tim Harney, who was featured on Cafe Racer TV. The bike was the cover and feature article in Iron and Air Issue 4. Tim started with a stock 68 Lightning that needed a restoration. The goal for the build was to create a new look for the bike while upgrading it with modern components. Tim stripped the bike down to the frame, removed all the paint, and cut off anything that wasn't strictly necessary. The motor was rebuilt with oversize pistons, racing valve springs, brass valve guides, the valves were lapped and it got all new gaskets. The gas tank, carbs, and oil tank were chemically treated. Tim sourced a set of Yamaha XS400 mag wheels and fat Kenda 130 tires. The bike was fitted with a Honda F4 front end and rear suspension from a Harley. The rear fender was kept stock but Tim fabricated a custom tail light for it.
The headlight, probably the most distinctive feature of the bike, was a flea-market find and was used originally on an old tugboat. For brakes, the bike was fitted with a Brembo caliper and CB750 master cylinder. The battery is tucked away inside a leather pouch that Tim designed. After some finishing touches from Hugh at 6th Street cycles, the bike was up and running.
The bike has been ridden and tuned by us since restoration. It gets a lot of attention and is a very unique build with some beautiful and creative touches.
The bike comes with a copy of the original Iron and Air issue.
